Have you ever wondered “What is the format of a product review?” I gotchu.

Hey there. Today, we’re going to talk about one of my favorite types of blog posts (also one of the most time-consuming) to write, product reviews.

Picture this: you typed “best dog brush” on the Google search bar, trying to find the perfect grooming brush for your dog. Amidst the sea of options, a well-written product review appears in your Google search results. It’s easy to read, informative, and speaks directly to your concerns as a pet parent.

Suddenly, you feel confident about clicking that checkout button, knowing that someone just like you has put the product to the test and given it their stamp of approval.

That’s the power of a well-crafted product review, helping customers make smart purchasing decisions.

Today, let’s talk about the anatomy of a good product review, why they’re so effective, and why it’s so important for you to master writing this type of blog post for your pet business.

So, grab your coffee (or tea), cuddle your four-legged friend, and let’s dig in!

What is a Product Review?

product review helps pet owners make smart purchasing decisions by evaluating a pet product’s features, benefits, performance, and value. It also provides valuable feedback for businesses.

In essence, it’s a win-win. Product reviews bridge the gap between businesses and consumers while fostering trust and transparency in the pet industry.

What are the Benefits of Writing Product Reviews?

Curious about the perks of writing product reviews for your pet business? Let’s explore how they can boost your credibility and bring in additional revenue.

1. Striking the Balance

Product reviews offer a unique opportunity to provide useful, honest, and reliable information to customers while simultaneously driving revenue for your pet business.

Offering accurate information about pet products can establish trust with your audience and generate more interest from potential customers, resulting in increased conversion rates.

2. Pitching Sponsored Posts

Want to partner with your favorite pet brands? Pitching a sponsored post and providing examples of your best works could be the ticket.

Your well-crafted positive reviews not only showcase your expertise but also demonstrate your potential as a valuable partner to brands seeking authentic endorsements.

3. Adapting to Services

Product reviews can be customized for both services and products. In fact, writing blog posts in a product review format can highlight the benefits of your pet services.

4. Personal Branding

Adding your personal touch to product reviews can help distinguish your brand from others in the market. Share your background, knowledge, and passion for pets. This will increase your credibility and trustworthiness in your niche.

As always, the primary focus should always be on providing value to customers.

5. Building Trust and Authority

Through well-written and informative product reviews, you establish your pet business as a trusted source of information within the pet community.

This not only fosters loyalty among existing customers but also attracts new ones who rely on your expertise when making purchasing decisions for their beloved pets.

6. Exploring Affiliate Marketing

Service-based pet businesses should consider affiliate marketing as an additional revenue source. By partnering with affiliate programs and recommending products to your audience, you can earn a commission for each sale made through your affiliate links.

Therefore, it’s a win-win situation where you help your customers find the best products while also boosting your revenue as a business owner.

What else do I need to add to my product review to make it stand out?

I know what you’re thinking, “Cherrie, is there anything else I can add to this product review format? Can I edit this to blend in with my current blog posts?”

Of course. I love this format because it’s so versatile. I can edit, add, and/or delete a section as needed. But, did you know that there are other ways you can take this product review to the next level?

1. Table of Contents

If you are a WordPress user, and your product review exceeds 2000 words, readers would appreciate you adding a table of contents. I add mine before or after my affiliate disclaimer. The table of contents is available for free with your WordPress theme of choice (I’m using Kadence). But Rank Math has this feature, too.

2. Real Product Photos and/or Videos

Nothing is more authentic than reading a product review that includes real product photos and/or videos.

In addition, product photos and videos can provide a visual representation of the product, giving readers a better idea of what to expect. This can help build trust with your audience and make your review more reliable and engaging.

3. Affiliate Disclosures

I already mentioned this earlier, but this requires mentioning again for legal purposes.

An affiliate disclaimer is a brief statement that informs readers that the content contains affiliate links, through which the writer earns a commission if readers make purchases.

This ensures transparency about potential financial incentives tied to product recommendations.

4. Internal Links

Internal links are hyperlinks that connect one blog post to another.  These links make it simple for potential customers to explore different parts of the website and also help search engines understand what your website is about.

For example, if you are writing a product review about the best “Hands-Free Dog Leash for Large Dogs that Pull and Chew,” you can link this to another blog post about the “10 Best Dog Leashes for Small to Large Dogs that Pull.”

This way, you’re helping potential buyers read from one product review to another, making it easy for them to explore different products and finally make a purchase.

By doing this, you’re not only providing valuable information to your customers but also establishing your pet business as a trusted source of information.

5. Product ratings

“I’ll give it an 8 out of 10”

“Amazing! 5 out of 5”

“Ugh, terrible 2 out of 10”

“You’re kidding. 3 stars”

Looks familiar? I know. These are called product ratings.

Product ratings help shoppers quickly decide if a product is worth buying based on what other people think. Yes, they’re not 100% reliable. But first-hand customer experience, whether good or bad, is a strong contributing factor to a well-written product review.

6. Social Proof

Social proof relies on the collective opinion or behavior of many people, indicating that a product is good because a lot of people say so or use it.

On the other hand, product ratings are typically based on individual opinions or evaluations of a single person’s experience with the product.

7. Customer Reviews

Customer reviews are comments or feedback provided by people who have used a product or service, sharing their experiences, opinions, and satisfaction levels. Customer reviews can be found on Amazon, Chewy, PetSmart, and PetCo. and other online shopping stores worldwide.

8. Common Questions

Usually, I add Google’s “People Also Asked” questions in my product reviews and place them under the FAQ’s section.

But if you feel that these questions aren’t enough, you can find other questions to answer in forums like Reddit or Quora.

9. Personal Experience

Every time I write a product review, I use the first-person point of view.

I like this writing style because I want my readers to feel like they’re talking face-to-face to someone who knows the product inside out.

Furthermore, I want my readers to feel comfortable knowing that they’re getting honest advice from someone who really knows their stuff and cares about keeping it real.

Final Thoughts

So, what is the format of a product review that truly helps customers make smart purchasing decisions?

One word: Good intentions.

Blog post formats like the one I shared today, only cover the basics, ie. on-page SEO, topic structure, and benefits to pet business owners like you and me.

In the end, no matter what format you use, whether this one or someone else’s, it all boils down to what readers think has the most trustworthy, honest, and responsible product review.

After last year’s messy Helpful Content Update, I’m afraid we can’t rely on Google regarding this anymore. But more about the HCU in another post (wink).

So, make it a habit to write truthful and authentic blog posts like product reviews. Trust me, having these types of content our your website will benefit you and your business in the long run.
