ChatGPT Mac OS App Now Available to All Users: Yay or Nay?

I was deep into writing a tutorial on Google Search Console, juggling multiple tabs in Google Chrome when a pop-up caught my eye: “ChatGPT Mac OS app now available to all users!” Woohoo.
I immediately paused my work and clicked to download.
After installation, I pinned the ChatGPT Mac OS app to my dock and signed in.
Now, is this new way of accessing ChatGPT better, or will I find myself going back to Chrome?
Let’s find out.

ChatGPT Mac OS App Now Available to All users
According to TechCrunch, the app was announced in June ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2024.
The launch was a bit overshadowed by the announcement of Chatgpt 4o.
But now that it’s officially available to all, let’s talk about what it can do.
Pros of the Chatgpt Mac Os App
Feature #1: Faster Access to Chatgpt
Accessing ChatGPT is now quicker than ever. Simply press Option + Space from any screen on your desktop, and ChatGPT is ready to assist you right away.
Feature #2 Take Screenshots
Need to capture something on your screen? Click the paper clip icon, and select Take Screenshot. Next, select a portion of your screen or Entire Screen, and then tell ChatGPT what you want from the image.
Feature #3 Upload Multiple Files At Once
No more one-by-one uploading! Click the paper clip icon, choose Upload File, select all the files you want, and click Open. Then, give ChatGPT instructions on how to handle them.
Features #4 Ask Anything
Got a question? Highlight the text, press Option + Space, and then type your command. ChatGPT will generate the information or feedback you need based on the selected text.
Features #5 Share Images
Easily share images with ChatGPT. Press Option + Space, drag and drop an image onto the screen, and type your command. ChatGPT will take it from there.
Feature #6 Search Conversations
Looking for something specific in your chat history? Just type a word into the search bar, and ChatGPT will find all relevant conversations containing that word.
Feature #7 Speak with Chatgpt from your desktop
Start a conversation with ChatGPT using voice commands. Simply tap the headphone icon to begin, making interaction even more intuitive and hands-free.
Cons of the Chatgpt Mac Os App (to date)
1. Limited Attachment Feature
The attachment feature represented by the paper clip icon, is only available to Chatgpt Plus users, which may limit functionality for free users.
2. Inability to Access Previous Content
Unlike using ChatGPT in Chrome, there’s currently no way to access previously generated content directly within the Mac OS app, which could hinder workflow continuity.
3. Font Size Limitations
Despite adjusting settings for larger text, the font size in the ChatGPT Mac OS app is still too small for me.
Although, when I copy and paste the text from the app to Google Chrome, the default font style and font size is Arial 12, compared to Chrome which is Arial 11.
4. Limited Access to Other GPTs
Unlike using ChatGPT in Chrome, I can’t access other GPTs from this app, which limits the diversity of AI models available for different tasks and needs.
ChatGPT Mac OS App Features I Still Need as an SEO Content Writer
As an SEO content writer, here’s what I think I still need from the ChatGPT Mac OS App:
1. Organized Chat History
I want to group and view my chat history without adding extra Chrome extensions to my browser.
2. Better Font Options
The text needs to be bigger and easier to read because my eyesight isn’t great.
3. Saved Versions of Content
Keep copies of what I’ve written before so I can go back and fix things easily.
Final Thoughts
So far, I’m not entirely sold on the ChatGPT Mac OS App, but it’s a step in the right direction.
With my dual monitor setup—ChatGPT on the left and Google Docs on the right—I find it convenient to switch between tabs for quick searches, especially since both are in Chrome.
But this app is not working for me right now.
I rely heavily on viewing ChatGPT history for editing purposes, something I can do seamlessly with ChatGPT in Chrome.
For now, I’ll stick with using ChatGPT through Chrome until the Mac OS App has improved.
But the ChatGPT logo looks so cool, so I will still keep it in my dock.
